Team Rise Up is on-going climbing instruction for youth, but that doesn’t begin to describe the essence of the program. Conceived to train and guide young climbers interested in pursuing climbing as a sport, the program provides basic to advanced instruction in a team oriented format. The Team is segmented into three groups: Beginner, Junior, and Advanced depending on aptitude, interests, and experience.
Unlike most other sports where participation means beating an opponent, the nature of climbing allows it to be competitive with other climbers or simply with oneself. A child need not compete in sanctioned events to grow and advance, the climbing itself provides the motivation in the form of one against the wall. Although participating in USA Climbing’s youth competition series is encouraged and Advanced team practices emphasize the skills and training required to excel at competitions, non-competitive team members will still find that the training provided can be applied to improving recreational climbing. Team members can expect to see their climbing performance improve while learning teamwork and making new friends in a structured environment.
Our Beginner team focuses on climbing safety basics such as rope skills and foundational movement. Our primary goal is to provide fun, multi-dimensional activities designed to build confidence, coordination, and self-sufficiency in a climbing oriented environment. Beginners start out learning to put on a harness, belay, and use the holds effectively. Team building games are interspersed with climbing activities to keep the program fresh and the kids interested.

The Junior team is our intermediate step toward the Advanced squad. At this level we concentrate almost exclusively on improving climbing performance with an eye toward moving up to the next level. Increased emphasis on movement skills and physical conditioning are the core elements to Junior team.
Prerequisites: Must pass the Rise Up Climbing belay test and ability to on-sight 5.8.
Schedule: On-going. Two sessions per week on Monday and Wednesday from 5 – 7 pm.
Cost: Rise Up membership plus $15 / month (total $50 / month). Junior team and higher members are expected to have their own shoes, harness, and chalk bag.
The Advanced team is Rise Up’s competitive level of instruction. Our goal is for each climber to pursue his or her potential in a supportive but demanding environment. Advanced climbers spend additional time and effort conditioning as well as learning to effectively participate in sanctioned regional competitions. The team travels to several regional venues twice per year to compete against climbers from other facilities. For those talented enough the series culminates in an annual national championship!
Prerequisites: Must have passed the Rise Up Climbing belay test and be able to on-sight 5.9 (10 years and under), 5.10a (11-12 years), or 5.10b (over 12 years).
Schedule: On-going. Two sessions per week on Tuesday and Thursday from 5 – 8 pm.
Cost: Rise Up membership plus $85 / month (total $120 / month). Junior team and higher members are expected to have their own shoes, harness, and chalk bag.
